Quantitative and qualitative research methods

1. Discuss the differences between quantitative and qualitative research.

Qualitative research

  • Qualitative research is used to gain opinion, motivation, deep into problem solving. The most common technique used for qualitative research is by group discussion, individual interviews, and by observation.
Quantitative research
  • Quantitative research is accumulating or quantify problem as much as many. The problem that has been quantified would be generated and can be transformed to the usable statistic. In quantitative research, it uses measurable data to define the facts and and uncover patterns in research and with this research, it can increase attitudes, behaviors, and opinions.
2. Identify the different quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Qualitative methods
  • Findings are judged by whether they make sense and are consistent with the collected data.
  • Results are validated externally by how well they might be applicable to other situations. This is tough to do; rich, detailed descriptions can help to bolster external validity.
  • Data is usually collected from small, specific and non-random samples.
Quantitative methods
  • Surveys - conduct online, meeting people in person, or distribute paper that contains question based on their goals. all the question has to be same by the way how it is delivered to the people.
  • Observation - Counting how many times phenomenon occur
3. Discuss the application of quantitative and qualitative to research and appropriate methods to be used.

Application of qualitative
  • In qualitative, the methods must be specified in how, when, where, and why to describe the question in the research. The methods also used to explore ideas, and design that does not need any valid feedback. all the research is unstructured or semi-structured interviews.
Application of quantitative
  • Quantitative research methods are also used to gather insights but the size and range of the user group can be expanded. This type of research focuses more on collecting user “data” as opposed to just insight. In general, I would describe quantitative research as answering the “who” and “what” of user behavior.
